28 Feb Quality teaching, internationalisation, excellence in research and social commitment; features that make the Faculty of Dentistry stand out
There are many scientific studies that demonstrate the direct impact that oral health care has on general health and increased risk of diseases such as acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and some types of cancer. For this reason, the role of the dentist is fundamental in raising awareness in society about the importance of prevention, ensuring good oral health and offering personalised treatments to each patient.
Since the creation of dentistry studies at the Sant Cugat Campus 25 years ago, the aim of the faculty has been to train dental professionals with a strong humanist vision of the profession who place the individual patient at the centre. With a teaching team made up of active professionals and leaders in research within the different fields of dentistry, both undergraduate and graduate students receive comprehensive and comprehensive training in which digitalisation plays a key role. For this reason, the faculty’s facilities have a state-of-the-art digital equipment for students to acquire skills for digital printing and radiology which have replaced the use of conventional materials. The Faculty of Dentistry incorporates new technologies such as CAD_CAM and 3D, among others in its academic programme. The high degree of digitalisation that the faculty has integrated in recent years has made it a reference centre at national level for the quality of its teaching and research.

In the area of Dentistry specifically, the ranking includes Dr Federico Hernández-Alfaro, professor and head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Dr José Nart, head of Periodontics; Dr Alberto Monje, lecturer in Periodontics; and Dr Conrado Aparicio, professor of the area of Research area. These four teachers are among the most influential researchers of the last year, thanks to the scientific impact of their publications during 2021.
The teaching excellence of the professionals who are part of the Faculty of Dentistry of UIC Barcelona has been recognised in recent years with the presence in the main national and international rankings.It is in third position in the Spanish El Mundo ranking and remains in the top positions of the Shanghai Ranking. Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
The high level of faculty-driven research has also been recognised this year in the Stanford University ranking (World’s Top 2% Scientists), in which four faculty members are among the 2% of the most cited researchers in the world according to their scientific trajectory during 2021.
Internationalisation is also a distinctive feature of the faculty, as it has partnerships with the University of the Andes and the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in Newark, New Jersey, USA, offering a double degrees through these centres to students studying dentistry.
